Pain with Intercourse

Jul 08, 2026

Why do I have pain with sex?

Sexual dysfunction is very common among women in the world, different research estimates anywhere from 5-75% of women experience sexual dysfunction at some point in their lifetime.

Symptoms of sexual dysfunction can include: pain with penetration (immediate or deep), pain with orgasm, difficulty to reach climax, inability to climax, pain with arousal, pelvic pain in certain positions, low libido, or difficulty to become aroused.

In the specific study I looked at around 6-30% experience pain with sex. Which can still include many of the symptoms described above so it's still not uber specific..

BUT, never the less, please know you do not need to live with these symptoms and you are not alone

There is help!

There are many reasons someone could be experiencing sexual dysfunction

Some may include: specific conditions like endo, cysts, fibroids, blood flow disorders, medications, hormonal changes can cause vaginal dryness, depression, stress, history of trauma of any kind, and of course pelvic muscle tightness.

Here are some tips for pain with penetration

  1. Use quality lubrication to help with penetration (like more lube than you think)
  2. Elevate your hips with a pillow under the pelvis in any position or you could also purchase a small wedge (they make specific ones for intimacy)
  3. Take time to ‘warm up’ and allow those muscles to relax before engaging with your partner

Some extra tip = foreplay/orgasm can help relax the pelvic muscles as well (if you have difficulty with this, the 'warm-up' could be helpful)
