Why do I leak pee when I run/jump/lift?

Jul 08, 2026

Why does the leaking happen?

Well, there are lots of factors but..

Our thoracic diaphragm (up by our ribs) and pelvic diaphragm (pelvic floor) need to be able to manage airflow within itself.

These two diaphragms work together during breathing and movement so our insides to stay put and pressure stays out of the pelvic floor.

When one of these diaphragm becomes restricted in any sense this is when you start to see the incontinence, pressure, or pain.

Here are 3 things to keep in mind:

  1. Avoid holding your breath during a lift or jump
    1. This puts a lot of pressure down on the pelvic floor and becomes difficult to control the pressure on the urethral sphincter, therefore you loose control
    2. There is a breathing technique we will work on tonight that allows you to breathe within the brace to manage air pressure during activity.
  2. Your pelvic floor muscles could be in an over lengthened or shortened state
    1. Either does not allow the muscle to fully lengthen or contract
    2. A muscle needs to be able to move through it's full range of motion to work properly
  3. Your 'egg' could be cracked during the activity
    1. Ribcage and pelvis need to be stacked on top of each other during a movement to manage air pressure and proper muscle activation of the whole system
    2. Take a nice exhale and get the front of the ribs to come down and in before you perform the movement
